Visual novels are one of the most popular genres for indie developers to make games for, due to there being a fantastic free engine out there that helps people easily make visual novels, as well as the low amount of resources required relative to other genres. As a result, indie developers need to do something unique in this genre to stand out. A Summer Story tackles this using very unique storytelling.
To install A Summer Story, simply run the executable.
The main thing to note is that this visual novel is extremely short, with your first playthrough taking maybe 15 minutes if you're a slow reader. The second thing to note is how its story is told. There is no regular dialogue in this game, and every single exchange is carried out via text message.
The length of the game also works against it, however. This game's story relies on tension, but there's almost no time for the unsettling feelings to settle in at all. This gets especially bad on later playthroughs since the game encourages repeat playthroughs to get the other endings.
The presentation of this game is extremely polished, with it using both sound and visuals to convey its stories. It touts itself as a sound novel, and lives up to it by using various sound effects to cue you in to progress the story.
In summary, this game's presentation is relatively strong, but its length is its biggest weakness. If you can look past that, then you should give A Summer Story a download.
