If you’ve read our articles in the past, then you know we’re big fans of censorship circumvention tools such as Psiphon, Tor Browser, Ultrasurf and Hotspot Shield. But with the articles in the past few months, we’ve written all there is to write about them, so this time we’re instead focusing on other not-so-well-known or not-so-famous alternatives, each with their pros and cons but still quite helpful in the fight against censorship.
The following are our picks for Psiphon alternatives, though do note that these are only some of the many alternatives.
Spotflux
Spotflux is a VPN service that lets you navigate all the sites you already visit but controlling what information the sites take from you. As it states, it lets you take back your privacy. It masks your IP through several servers, making it impossible for anything to trace you. It also works as shield against Malware by preventing access attempts against your computer. Many users in online reviews claim it’s better than Hotspot Shield, and that’s saying a lot. Much like that program, there’s a paid version as well, with a monthly subscription that routes you through premium servers for not only added speed but protection as well. It’s very easy to use and install, so give it a shot whenever you have the chance.

CyberGhost
Cyberghost is another good VPN service. As with others, it creates tunnels through which you connect, thus hiding your IP and sensitive information from other sites, as the only thing they’ll see is the VPN’s information. The downside to this one however is that the free plan only covers up to 1GB of data transfers, which nowadays is low even by mobile standards. On the upside, the level of encryption is tremendous, thus making sure your data is protected.

I2P
Invisible Internet Project creates a protective layer over your applications so that all communications going in and out are heavily encrypted. Best of all, its design is a bit paranoid as it trusts not one single user or system, making the connections both dynamic and distributed. Your connection never stays in the same place for long, making it very difficult for others to spy on you. Its true power and the upper hand over Psiphon and other software on this list is that it’s not just for internet browsing, but it can be used for any number of purposes: IRC, Peer-to-Peer, Mailing, File sharing, among others and it’s available on all platforms including Android smartphones. Best of all, it also allows the creation of websites that exist only on I2P, much like those that can be created and deployed on Tor.

So those three are some of the alternatives around for Psiphon, Hotspot Shield and the other censorship circumvention tools like Tor Browser, UltraSurf or Freegate we’ve discussed in the past. As always, if you think we’ve failed to include one or just want to sing their praises, then hit us up in the comments below and don’t forget to come back for more, right here on Rocky Bytes!
