Low budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to create an epic, the creators instead need to focus on one unique feature to make their games stick out. From these restrictions comes some truly inventive concepts. One of them is Pearl Grabber, a game where your main goal is to slap some pearls out of clams.
To play Pearl Grabber, simply unzip the archive and run the executable.
The game's visual style is reminiscent of a PS2 game - the resolution is low and blurry, and the textures and anti aliasing are lacking. It makes up for it with the arts style - the island feels unsettling, with things feeling just out of place enough to make you uncomfortable.
The premise of the game is simple - you arrive on an island where a living statue tells you that you should put your arm and hand to good use. He imbues your hand with the ability to instantly open clams and grab the pearls inside.
And that[s where the game takes its premise from. You will wander around the island slapping clams the whole time, returning occasionally to the statue for a new power upgrade that will unlock new areas. There are some surprisingly poignant moments with voice acting that is surprisingly introspective and may lead you to reevaluate some things in your life.
All in all, Pearl Grabber is a very surprising diamond in the rough - while the game seems like it's not taking itself seriously, there are some heavy messages deep down.
