2D platformers have been steadily getting ignored by the AAA gaming industry, leaving it up to indie developers to take up the mantle. However, the progenitor of indie games, flash games, have also gone really far in creating high quality 2d platformers. One of the best-known ones is the Red Ball series, a physics-based series where you just play as a red ball. Let's look at Red Ball 4: Volume 1.
To play Red Ball 4: Volume 1, simply run it with a Flash player of your choice.
The premise is that the evil squares in the world are trying to turn anything round into squares. This is the start of the Red Ball's journey to defeat them.
This game is deceptively simple. You control the ball with the arrow keys. The right and left arrow key will roll the ball left and right and the up key will make the ball jump. There are some enemies that you have to land directly on top of and you can take three total hits before dying.
Each level's objective is also simple. Simply collect all the stars and get to the finish flag. What gives this game its complexity is the sandbox physics. Speedrunners have found a ton of tiny little tricks, to the point of creating a massive guide documenting all these tricks. This game is the definition of high skill ceiling.
All in all, however, Red Ball 4: Volume 1 is a great game that has some of the highest skill ceilings in flash games.
