Advance Wars revolutionized the turn-based strategy genre, giving newcomers an easy series to jump into the genre while also giving mainstay players a surprising amount of strategic depth. Before that, turn-based strategy games like Final Fantasy Tactics or Civilization were grueling, long term micromanagement games. Advance Wars instead had you throwing disposable units by the dozen at the enemy. It inspired a ton of different games, with one of them being the Battalion series. Let's look at Battalion: Skirmish.
To play Battalion: Skirmish, simply run it with whatever SWF player you have.
This game overhauls the visual style from the first game by replacing everything with pixels. leading to a more cohesive looking product.
The game consists of only one mission, as the game is meant as a sneak peek into the future of the series. In the mission, the new unit Warmachine takes the forefront, as you can't win without utilizing it. It acts as a mobile command base, able to harvest resources, build new units, and engage in combat all at once. Considering the mission opens with you surgically freeing it with a small force and then building an army from it to take out the enemy, you can see how the mission is basically unwinnable without utilizing it.
All in all, Battalion: Skirmish is only one mission so there's very little play time. However, it does give a fantastic look into how the series is going to pan out in the future.
