Tower Defense games have generally fallen out of favor in the mainline gaming industry in the 21st century. There are very few tower defense games in the AAA market, and even if they're there, it's usually as part of a gimmick or a minigame. Thus, Flash games have had time to refine and innovate on the formula by themselves. The Bloons Tower Defense series is probably the best example of this innovation. Let's look at Bloons Tower Defense.

You'll notice that this game is very much the first draft of the formula. There is only one level, designed in a way where you have to strategically place your towers for success. I actually found that this game is much harder than the later entries in the series, with towers costing a lot while having low effectiveness. I found myself having to hold out with weak towers well into the mid game to survive.

The game is a very solid tower defense game, but you'll definitely feel how unfinished it is. There's no save function, and the gameplay loop consists of you playing 37 levels over and over again. There is absolutely no music either, and you can't start mid run.

All in all, Bloons Tower Defense is a very strong first try at the formula that the franchise will be known for later, but you'll definitely feel how rough it is.
