Now...I can't speak from personal experience. I can, however, speak from my friend's personal experience. Researchers seem to fully rely on their own organizational skills, rarely using programs that normal people wouldn't. But what if there was a program that specifically was tailored towards those very same researchers? Mendeley Desktop aims to be that very program.
Mendeley Desktop is an interactive social media network for researchers. It's been described as "a mashup of Facebook and Outlook with some professional networking features, threw in a dash of scientific interaction, and pointed the businesses end at researchers". It indexes your papers and research and makes it accessible to other researchers also using the network.
The first thing that this program asks you to do when you boot it up is to create a free account if you haven't already. This functions like any social media account and lets you share and sync data across multiple devices. The registration is even easier than most, only requiring a name, email, and password with no other personal data required. The interface is also incredibly simple. There are tabs that let you quickly access your library, groups, people, and paper. The interface reminds me of some old era email clients, except it has sync capabilities. Uploading files is as easy as drag and dropping.
If any of this sounds overloading, fear not. Mendeley Desktop has a very helpful built-in help option, complete with video tutorials and local workshops. If you're a researcher and stumbled across this review, give it a try!
