Full of expectation we enter Paranoiac a 2D top down horror game that warns at the start it will have jump scares. You play as Miki a young girl who has inherited her somewhat strange late auntie’s house and you start by wandering round and discovering the house, some of the doors are locked though but eventually strange things will start happening and you will be being chased by monsters.
The game reminded me of a horror version of Undertale however you do not have that level of interaction with other characters but in regards to the look and game play it is visually similar, however this kind of retro gaming style only appeals to certain players and it is hard to make a truly terrifying game when the graphics are in an 8 bit style, perhaps it is that we have been spoiled with releases such as Five Nights at Freddie’s and Pesadelo recently that it is very hard for others to compete with the kind of jump scares those games begin and perhaps that is why I felt somewhat disappointed with Paranoiac, perhaps the opening warning builds up a level of expectation for horror and fear that was not delivered in the game itself that being said it is a difficult task to make a 2D game truly scary and I’m sure this game will appeal to many players especially fans of the retro style of gaming.
