DOOM is one of the oldest FPSes in existence, and its engine is famously so robust that it can run on pretty much anything and also create pretty much anything. From FPSes to RPGs to companions to a city living game, it has a ton of different mods that can all do different things. One of the better ones out there is Golden Souls.
To install Golden Souls, you need to have ZDoom and move the PK3 file into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM mods.
Once you boot this mod up, you'll find an art style that almost fully resembles Super Mario 64. The story behind this game is that the UAC scientists wanted to make a couple of paintings real. They did this by using the mystical golden souls. However, the tides of hell started pouring through the paintings, so they send you in.
Much like Super Mario 64, the main gameplay loop is you jump into a few paintings and clear the world. The first thing that a DOOM veteran will notice is that the combat has been overhauled to be much slower than before, which is kind of a shame. Exacerbating that problem are these new plant enemies that are bullet sponges and you can't move on until you kill them.
However, the art style and atmosphere are incredibly strong. If you want to experience what the DOOM engine can do, then you should give Golden Souls a download, especially if you are fond of the Mario art style.
