DOOM is one of the oldest FPSes in existence, and its engine is famously so robust that it can run on pretty much anything and also create pretty much anything. From FPSes to RPGs to companions to a city living game, it has a ton of different maps that all do different things. One of the best ones out there is dead.air, a map that grabs the first level of DOOM 2 and does some amazing things to it.
To install dead.air, you need to have ZDoom and move the WAD file into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM mods.
You play as a technician who goes to investigate an issue that has the news network on fritz. You quickly find yourself walking into different rifts of reality in a cosmic horror themed map. Enemies that are comprised of difficult to see static will stalk you throughout the colorless, washed out corridors. It's an interesting beginning and is able to really set a tone.
The combat also feels tactical, despite its constant slaughter. Each monster has been redone with different sprites to look incredibly creepy. One of them has a head that looks like a plague doctor, and black vacant eyes, which ins incredibly creepy.
The map only gets creepier and creepier as you keep going until the final battle. If you're a fan of reimaginings of classic DOOM maps, then you should definitely give dead.air a download. Its tone is one of the most unique in DOOM.
