Back in 94, mods were pretty much an open book. Almost nobody even thought about its full potential. However, one man named Justin Fisher released a full conversion mod that turned DOOM into an Aliens experience, and it changed the game industry forever. Even though he released almost nothing since then, he forced people to consider the legality and potential of mods. One of the many famous conversion mods that took after him is the Darkest Hour, a Star Wars-themed total conversion mod.
Installing The Darkest Hour is simple. You need to have ZDoom and move the WAD file into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM maps.
This map heavily incorporates assets from the Star Wars Dark Forces game. However, it doesn't stop right there. It tries to slot itself in to the Star Wars canon and has it set during the Star Wars movie. You are a mercenary who starts off working for the empire, but, of course, switches over to the rebellion. To be fair, though, he doesn't turn because of idealism - he turns because he got screwed over by the empire.
The gameplay is also different from other DOOM maps. It uses a hub system and can allegedly be completed fully with just a pistol. It also swaps every single sprite over to be using Star Wars sprites. All in all, The Darkest Hour is a fascinating Star Wars total conversion map that also plays extremely well, and it should be experienced by fans.
