Directx is a group of technologies and libraries with drivers necessary for the executing of PC games, multimedia content and associated devices for operating systems based on Windows.
Because of the big distribution of such libraries almost 90% of the PC games available require the installation of DirectX for their operation thanks to the Direct3D module. With no doubt, the games are just a small part of all the functions of this technology as apart from that it has incorporated various modules that allow control different things:
- The DirectInput module controls all the external devices like mouses, joysticks, bluetooth devices, etc.
- The DirectSound module allows the reproduction of audio through different devices available on our PC.
- DirectDraw allows graphic representation in 2D using all the graphic power which is ideal for desktop environment or even web browsing.
- With the help of DirectPlay the network communication of games gets easier, allowing to play multi-player games though the internet or local net, for example.
- DirectShow includes everything related to the fast video and multimedia playback even though in the latest versions it is being replaced by Media Foundation for a major versatility.
It is very recommendable and, we would say, necessary to maintain the DirectX updated for a correct functionality of our games and everything related to multimedia and sound playback and device recognition so that we can get the full performance of our computer.
