Liminal Dreams 1.0

Low-budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to dazzle the audience with beautiful graphics, they instead need to focus on something else to stand out. These restrictions can lead to some very creative premises. Let's look at Liminal Dreams.

To install Liminal Dreams, simply unzip the files inside the archive into any folder you want.

The plot is rather straightforward but still confusing. You wake up inside a grey bunker with no memories and nobody else anywhere. There is only a TV that will teleport you into differently-themed worlds where the inhabitants will ask for your help.

As the title suggests, all these different worlds are liminal spaces. That means that there's an overriding sense that something's wrong even when the environment is rather innocuous. The worlds you traverse are all striking to witness as well. It goes through a whole bevy of environments such as a fantasy world with a dragon's corpse and a knight that reminds one of Dark Souls, an indoor park with friendly ghosts scattered around, and one world of hedge mazes that has...confusing freaks of nature that are nonetheless friendly.

There is a secret ending in the game that requires a ton of work to get to, but if you miss one of the requirements, then you'll have to restart the entire game to do so. That's one of the main problems I have with the game, but the lore is shockingly deep otherwise.

All in all, Liminal Dreams is an incredibly unique game that everybody should check out.
