2D platformers have been steadily getting ignored by the AAA gaming industry, leaving it up to indie developers to take up the mantle. However, the progenitor of indie games, flash games, have also gone really far in creating high quality 2d platformers. Some of them have even gone on to receive commercial releases. One of them is N: The Way of the Ninja.
To play N: The Way of the Ninja, make sure you have a player capable of running SWF files. Then, just run it with that.
This game is very simple in concept. You move left and right with the arrow keys and jump with Q. If you want to wall jump, you just have to touch a wall in midair then jump again. That's all of the controls. Your goal is to hit a switch to open the finish door and get to it while staying alive. Simple, right?
What sets this game apart is the physics and movement systems. Your speed, momentum, and routing is what will let you avoid the various obstacles and automated weapons that will target you. Chain guns and homing missiles will keep you pressured and you'll feel like a real ninja as you manage to avoid them with sheer speed. Your character also has only a couple of seconds to live, and you have to extend your time alive by collecting gold blocks.
All in all, N: The Way of the Ninja is incredibly simple, but there's also a very high skill ceiling despite how simple it is on the surface.
