Overheating is one of the biggest risks to everyday computer usage, especially if you're running intensive games or benchmarks. If you overheat, your computer will automatically shut down to prevent your CPU from being damaged. This typically doesn't give any consideration to your unsaved files. However, despite the temperature being such an issue, your computer doesn't display this information straight up. You need third party software to track it. SpeedFan is one of them.
The app's interface is incredibly straightforward, which is always a plus when it comes to displaying information. There are tabs at the top of the screen that show you various information. Tabs include Readings, Clock, Info, Exotics, S.M.A.R.T, and Charts. Clocks lets you reset your motherboard clocks, which is incredibly dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Most users will simply temperature, fan speed, and voltages. You can also track these readings over time, so you can instantly see if something's wrong.
There is a very obvious downside to SpeedFan, though. The information isn't presented in a beginner friendly way. You need to already be familiar with the terminology and exactly what you're looking for to get the most out of this program. That's because the readings are displayed in a way that only shows an icon and the intiials of whatever component you're looking at. While the program is very good at warning you to not do anything dangerous if you don't know what you're doing, the risk is still there.
If you know what you're doing and waht you're there for, SpeedFan is a good program.
