There are a ton of online games that feature character vs character combat or vehicular combat, but there have been a surprisingly few amounts of games outside of those two types of games. Nobody has really made an authentic ship combat game for some reason. Well, Wargaming agrees with you and created World of Warships, a game all about online authentic WW2 ship combat.
Do note that you need Steam to play World of Warships. Once you've downloaded and installed it, you'll need to head on over to this link to install it.
Once you boot the game up, you'll be able to quickly and easily hop into a game. The combat in this game is fantastic, easily one of the best parts about it. It is slow-paced and incredibly tactical, and Wargaming has once again managed to somehow translate the slow, ponderous controls of a vehicle to somehow feel more accessible on a mouse and keyboard. Rudder and throttle are designed to be set and forgotten, as though a subordinate had an order yelled at them while the captain worried about other things. The slows maneuverability with each ship makes flanking and sneak attacks incredibly powerful, giving it all a tactical nature as well.
However, the free to play model leaves a lot to be desired. Everything is almost prohibitively expensive and grinding is a massive chore. If you can look past that, however, then you should give World of Warships a download - it is probably the most authentic ship experience out there.
