DOOM has been trudging along for decades now, with its legacy straining under its own weight at times. However, there are communities around the world that all love DOOM, and a few years ago, the french DOOM community released a compilation that they all worked on to celebrate DOOM - the very aptly named 20 Years of DOOM.
To install 20 Years of DOOM, you need to have ZDoom and move the WAD file into the GZDoom folder, which is pretty par for the course for DOOM maps.
The main downside to this map is that it is a slot based community project, which is completely understandable considering the scale of this project, but that does lead to it having varying qualities. However, even the weakest maps have their own strength, such as its music or atmosphere.
The gameplay is really good, save for a few corridor shooter segments that are just a slog. It's much faster paced and hectic than typical DOOM gameplay. The creators also do an admirable job introducing a steady difficulty scaling. Despite it being created by so many different people, it still has a very manageable difficulty curve.
There are plenty of great moments to be had, such as flipping a switch to unleash a horde of monsters or dealing with a maze with monsters hiding behind every corner. If you want to experience one of the best compilations of levels in the community, then you should give 20 Years of DOOM a download - there are a ton of things to experience.
