Flash games were the precursors to many parts of the gaming industry today. The creativity and willingness to experiment has translated over to the indie games industry, many design elements that are used in AAA games today were first observed in flash games, and the casual nature of many flash games has translated over to the mobile game industry. One formula, the overhead survival shooter with upgrades as the game goes on, started in the Boxhead series. Let's look at Boxhead.
To install Boxhead, just run it with whatever SWF player you have.
The controls are simple. Use the arrow keys to move around, and the spacebar to fire your current weapon. You also have to use the 1-4 keys on your keyboard to swap your weapons.
The game is split up into a couple of different levels. Every level has you escorting civilians around a map and trying to get to the evacuation point. These civilians will follow you as closely as they can manage, but they're pretty slow. It's up to you to shoot the zombies and keep the civilians safe, which is made easier by the fact that each shot that lands will knock each enemy back.
That's all, though. It's a pretty simple game and pretty repetitive.
All in all, Boxhead is a fantastic game with some nice ideas, but they will only get refined as the series goes on.
