World of Warcraft was an absolute powerhouse in the gaming industry, singlehandedly defining the MMORPG genre for years to come. And just like any game that is an absolute powerhouse, it spawned countless imitators. Many of them are rote, with few original ideas and almost no shame in how it's structured. However, there are a few imitators that were worth playing - one of them is RIFT.
Note that to play RIFT, you'll need to install Steam. Once you do that, go to this link to install it.
Booting it up, you'll notice that there are two different factions much like WoW. Each faction has their own personal lore, but it doesn't rear its head up much after a certain point. The main gimmick this world has are the eponymous rifts. These rifts can open anywhere and monsters pour from them, with the world constantly under attack. The main conflict in the story comes from the ideological conflict on how to deal with the rifts, which is a much more creative premise than usual.
These rifts are also part of the public questing system, where there are massive, memorable battles in public areas that you don't have to go through a giant questline for. On top of that, there are plenty of side activities like fishing and crafting.
There's plenty to do in RIFT, and the rifts themselves add enough flavor to each zone so that the leveling process doesn't feel boring. If that sounds like your cup of tea, you should give it a shot.
