World of Warcraft takes place in the universe of the Warcraft series of real-time strategy games and a continuation of the Warcraft storyline. The game consists of two continents that make up the planet of Azeroth. These are Kalimdor and the Eastern Kingdoms. As expansions were added to the game, the world was expanded and added new places to explore. These places consists of new continents on the world of Azeroth: Northrend, Pandaria, and a few new islands that tend to specific races. There are also new worlds to explore, these are Outland and Draenor. Outland is what is remaining of the planet Draenor in modern times in the game, however Draenor is now a playable planet as of Warlords of Draenor.
This World of Warcraft download, being an MMORPG, has playable races and classes that make up the player's role in the game. These races are a part of two factions: The Alliance and the Horde. These factions have many different stances and beliefs than one another, and are rivals. The races that make up the Alliance are the Humans, Dwarfs, Night Elves, Gnomes, Draenei (as of the Burning Crusade expansion), and Worgens (as of the Cataclysm expansion). The Horde are made up of the Orcs, Undead (aka Forsaken), Tauren, Trolls, Blood Elves (as of the Burning Crusade expansion), and Goblins (as of the Cataclysm expansion). The last race are the Pandarens, which is a race that can be either Alliance or Horde, and you choose your faction at the end of the beginning storyline for the race. The Pandarens were added in the Mists of Pandaria expansion. Of all of these races, you are able to choose between Male or Female and customize how your character looks. Some of the races have different variations of customization to suit the personality of the race. Each race also has special skills that do different things that can benefit the player.
With this World of Warcraft free download, you will see that the game also has three primary roles that you will play in the game. These are Tanks, a protector of the group and takes the main brunt of the damage. Damage (commonly referred to as "DPS" (Damage Per Second) in-game) which aim at damaging the target, and healers which heal the group of the damage it has taken. Some classes in the game can be tanks, damage, or healers - some of them can be multiple roles, or even all of them. These classes are specified when you are creating your character in the game.
World of Warcraft has many classes to choose from that perform at least one of the three roles specified above. Some races cannot play certain classes because either their race is weak in the aspects that make up the class, or they do not suit the traits needed for the class. The classes that you can choose from are Warrior, Paladin, Hunter, Rogue, Priest, Shaman, Mage, Warlock, Druid, Death Knight (as of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion), and Monk (as of the Mists of Pandaria expansion). Each of the classes have different specializations that allows the player to play each class in a different way. The specializations can also change the role the class is able to play, depending on the abilities the class and specialization allow the player to do. Compared to many other MMORPGs, World of Warcraft's class system is a lot more versatile than average, which makes for a much more unique playing experience.
There are many realms on World of Warcraft that the player has to choose from. These realms have different amounts of people that play on them, and generally there is quite an imbalance between the two factions in terms of population. This can really depend on the realm that the player chooses to play their characters on. There are also different types of Realms. There are Player vs Environment (PvE) realms, which makes Player vs Player (PvP) combat a choice when playing the game. Player vs Player (PvP) realms, which makes the player constantly vulnerable to attacks from the opposing faction if the player is in a contested area on the map or if they attack enemies first in friendly territory. There are also Role Playing (RP) realms, which are primarily for players that like role playing gameplay. These realms, too, can be PvE or PvP realms.
Once you have played the WoW download, you will see that at the beginning of the game, the player is put in a starting area that is specific to the race that they have picked. Starting areas are for levels 1 through 10, and generally introduces the player to the game through the questlines. Most of the lower level areas, such as the starting area, are in friendly territory according to the player's faction. However, as the player levels up, the player will have to do questlines in contested territory, which is territory that both factions do not own, therefore both factions travel through and do quests in these areas. If players are on PvP realms, this means that the opposing faction will be able to attack them if they so choose without the player's consent. So the player should travel with caution and be prepared to attack other players of the opposing faction if they are on a PvP realm while they level up. This can also happen on PvE realms, but the player will have to be flagged for PvP (the player is able to turn this on - it is off by default) to allow PvP combat if they choose.
The player is able to communicate with friends in World of Warcraft by using the Battle.net Real ID system. Players add their friends' IDs so they can see their status, chat, and play with them in-game. Players also have the ability to join guilds, which allows them to meet and play with new people. There are many different types of guilds, and this is determined by the leaders of the guild. There are PvP guilds (focus on playing Player vs Player gameplay such as battlegrounds and arenas), PvE guilds (focus on playing end-game PvE raid content), leveling guilds (help level you up), role playing guilds (primarily focus on role playing gameplay), and social guilds (a guild for meeting new people and chatting in-game). Some guilds have a laid back atmosphere, where others are serious in achieving as much as they can in the game.
As players level up they have the ability to do quests, and once the player reaches level 15 they can also do dungeons. Quests and dungeons are the player's primary methods of leveling up their character. You can do quests solo or with friends, but dungeons must have five people. You queue up for these dungeons using Dungeon Finder, a matchmaking system in-game (added in Wrath of the Lich King), which allows you (and your friends) to queue up with random people in the game to any of the dungeons you choose, or a random dungeon. As you level up, new dungeons open up to you. Quests and dungeons award in-game gold (World of Warcraft currency), a beneficial item, or gear. Gear are items such as shirts, pants, shoes, etc that your player uses not only as armor, but as you level up gear will start giving you attributes that will be beneficial to your character based on the class and specialization that you pick.
You are also able to do PvP content such as battlegrounds and arenas. In battlegrounds you are in a group of 10 to 40 people (depends on the map) aiming to either kill the opposing team or capture positions on the battle map. In arenas, you are in a group of 2, 3, or 5 individuals including yourself aiming to strategically kill the opposing team. Once you die in arenas you are dead for the rest of the match. PvP kills provide the player with Honor which can be used as currency to buy special gear specifically made for benefiting you in PvP related battles. In arenas, you are awarded Conquest Points which gives you higher tiered PvP gear that you can only access doing arenas.
Once you reach the highest level you are then able to do end-game PvE raid content. Raids are usually a group of players between 10 and 25 individuals, but can technically be anything more than 5 players up to 40 players depending on the group and the content. World of Warcraft raids are best done in guilds where the guild can organize which players are best to play specific roles in their guild raids. Guilds are the best way to learn the raid battles and to communicate with other players in the raid. Good raid leaders will give players roles so they focus on specific things during battles. This allows the group to better micromanage to successfully defeat raid bosses. However, if you are not able to get into a guild that have regular well managed guild raids, you are able to use the World of Warcraft Raid Finder system, which is similar to the dungeon matchmaking system, Dungeon Finder, but with tougher requirements and more players in each group. Defeating raid bosses is like defeating bosses in dungeons. The game randomly drops gear and you may or may not receive new gear according to your class and specialization based on the boss. Certain bosses drop specific pieces of gear, and these pieces of gear may or may not drop during your raid-run, which requires players to continue raiding each week to get the gear they want or need.
World of Warcraft allows players to level their characters up to level 20 for free to try out the game. Once you are level 20 however, you must purchase the game and pay a monthly subscription. The game's subscription is $14.99 a month, but can be less if you pay for an annual, bi-yearly, or yearly subscription. Currently, Blizzard allows you to buy World of Warcraft and all of its expansions for about $70. World of Warcraft regularly goes for $19.99 (includes all expansions up to Mists of Pandaria), and Warlords of Draenor goes for $49.99 and includes a free level 90 character boost. Usually, when new expansions come out for World of Warcraft, players are required to purchase the new expansion, but new players will be able to simply pay $19.99 for the original game with all the older expansions included, and $49.99 for the newest expansion. This is something Blizzard Entertainment has been doing for the last few years to encourage new people to play World of Warcraft. In order to play World of Warcraft beyond level 20, including all of the expansions, you must have a World of Warcraft subscription.
As of November of 2014, the newest expansion released and available of play is World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor or WoD With more raids, a level increase from 90 to 100, many skill changes, graphical changes, the addition of the Draenor continent, continued storyline, and new garrison features in-game you will have hours and hours of more gameplay to appease your World of Warcraft addiction as you explore the new lands of Draenor.
