There are tons of media players out on the market that handle all sorts of tasks. You have media players that can play 4k video files.  There's some that can change the brightness, contrast, color, and other options that can have a positive effect on how a video looks to you such as sharpness. You can turn on/off subtitles and some media players will even let you edit the subtitles of a particular part of a movie.

You even have media players that go as far as including features that are meant to be done by other programs: there are media players that allow you to convert audio and video files - this is something that you used to have to download an audio or video converter to accomplish. But not anymore. You can now take care of those tasks from within your media player.

But what about those of us that just want to dial things back a bit? What about those of us that want the classic experience back?
