Minecraft 1.5
Minecraft 1.5 has been deemed the Redstone Update since this update added a number of new redstone related blocks and a new decorative block - block of quartz. There was also a new texture pack format added, lighting engine optimization, and a added a scoreboard system.
In version 1.5.0, a preview for Minecraft Realms was added to the game menu. A scoreboard system was also added which is intended for map makers and admins to track, edit, and display certain in-game objectives. A few new commands were added, as well as Nether Quartz Ore - which is a new block that can be found in the Nether.
A lot of new blocks and items were added. These include an Activator Rail, Block of Redstone, Daylight Sensor, Dropper, Hopper, Minecart with Hopper, Minecart with Spawner, Minecart with TNT, Redstone Comparator, Trapped Chest, Weighted Pressure Plates, Nether Brick (which is an item, not a block), Nether Quartz (as well as Ore), Block of Quartz, Quartz Slab, Quartz Stairs, Chiseled Quartz Block, Pillar Quartz Block, Sandstone Double Slab, and multiple snow heights.
There were a few lighting engine optimizations made to the game in 1.5. This added support for more realistic lighting in the game. There were various edited to texture packs in the game, as well as added enchantments. A few in game notifications were added, including death messages which will include how the player died in the game. There was added inventory management, new language files, new options, and a lot more! All of these changes also include many different bug fixes to the game.
