Minecraft 1.7.2
Minecraft 1.7.2 has been deemed The Update that Changed the World because of all of the added features that changed the world generator.
There have been many commands added to the game in 1.7.2. These include /setidletimeout - which will automatically kick players from the game after a set amount of time of being idle, /tellraw - which creates buttons and formatted text in chat, /summon - which is used to spawn any entity in the game, /achievement - which is used by admins to give a player an achievement, /setblock - which is used to create, delete, and replace blocks, /testforblock - which checks for blocks in specific locations, and /setworldspawn - which sets the world spawn point for all players that enter the server.
Some particle effects were also added. These include fishing particle effects, which adds bubbles that show up near your bobber just before you catch something while fishing. Falling also has particle effects. A few new achievements and statistics were also added to the game.
Some of the most interesting additions to Minecraft in version 1.7.2 were added biomes. These include Mesas, Savannas, Sunflower Plains, Roofed Forests, Birch Forests, Flower Forests, a Mega Taiga (a very large taiga with added elements), Extreme Hills+, and Deep Oceans (simply deeper than a normal ocean biome).
A new worldtype was also added, called AMPLIFIED. This "amplifies" the world and causes the terrain to use the entire world height. Many different types of blocks and items have also been added, including different types of wood and wood planks, different types of saplings and leaves, more fish, and more!
