Low budget indie games tend to be some of the most creative around, assuming they aren't just flipping assets poorly in Unity. Without the budget to create an epic, the creators instead need to focus on one unique feature to make their games stick out. From these restrictions come some truly inventive concepts. One of them is Somnium, which has you follow a lone prisoner who's maintaining an isolated space station.
To play Somnium, simply run the executable after unzipping it to a folder.
You play as a prisoner who's alone on a tiny and remote space station. You're intermittently awakened from cryo suspension to carry out certain tasks like recalibrating the sensor. There's nobody else on the station, but the station's AI will, give you tasks and there are some voice logs that someone's left for you to listen to.
The most striking part of the game is easily the black hole that's constantly outside the window every time you go to the calibration room. It's a fantastic contrast from the grungy hallways you're forced to constantly walk through every time you wake up.
The story is told pretty much exclusively through the voice log and the fact that the black hole is steadily getting closer every time you wake up. There's some psychological horror elements that are present throughout the game, but it's generally about one man steadily going insane from sheer isolation.
All in all, if you want to play a game with an incredibly unique premise, then you should give Somnium a download.
